Holidays are a time of festivity and celebration. There are lots of parties, cards and gifts exchanged, and some people drink a lot of alcohol.
If, for you, holidays are
something to endure rather than to enjoy, please call me.
We can have luncheon at Cass Cafe or Traffic Jam (my treat) and talk through your concerns.
One function of a church is to enable us to ventilate about our fears and phobias. Anything you confide to me is held in absolute confidence.
Call me at 313-833-9107 (church) or 313-396-5228 (home). I look forward to hearing from you. David.
A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!

The next meeting of the Women's Book Club will be on Sunday December 5, 2004 from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM in Memorial Hall. We will be discussing children's books. Each participant is asked to have read a children's book, any children's book. This can be one you read as a child or one you have always wanted to read. You will be given 5-10 minutes to summarize the book, and to explain why you choose that particular book. There will also be a book exchange.
All are welcome. Contact Maria Majer for more information.

We would welcome the donations of the following for Noel Night: Clean glass jars, (similar to a 20 oz spaghetti sauce jar), cookies, decorations, and volunteers. The volunteers would act as greeters, refreshment monitors, and guides for church tours. On First Friday, we will be decorating the interior of the church after dinner. Please make your reservations by December 1. We are also looking for more talent to perform in Memorial Hall during Noel Night, specifically storytellers and musicians. See Dan Weist for more information. If you would like to help with the cookies and cider, see Ruth Siefert during coffee hour.
Attention Lay Leaders
Will you help the Worship Committee complete its 2004-2005 Sunday Service Schedule by signing up today to serve on the Sunday (or Sundays) of your choice? The sign up sheet is posted on the bulletin board next to the memorial flowers sign up sheet. Charlotte Allen is coordinating lay leaders' activities. If you have any questions or want a little coaching - see Charlotte or Rev. Parke. Thank you
We will express cheer and gladness in song at our Women's Alliance noon luncheon and Christmas Sing-Along on Wednesday, December 15, 2004 in Memorial Hall led by the music of Jonathan Schultz and friends. To make reservations please phone the church office at 313-833-9107 or Eiko Takemoto by noon Monday, December 13. The luncheon is $6.

`Tis the Time for Toys and Trinkets
The sale table is back for the season, for gifts and self-gifts. Look in the corner during coffee hour, each Sunday from November 28 until New Year's. This is a church fund-raiser; all profits go to buy things for the church which we couldn't otherwise afford.

Eighteenth Annual Kwanzaa Jazz Concert
You are cordially invited to attend the Eighteenth Annual Kwanzaa Jazz Concert at First Unitarian Universalist Church of Detroit on Sunday, December 26 at 4:00 P.M. The church is located at 4605 Cass Ave. at Forest in Detroit’s Cultural Center. This concert has become an annual event. Each year the concert is attracting more people who love jazz.
We are very proud to again present Detroit's own world-renowned pianist Barry D. Harris. Barry has become a living jazz legend, a master of the Bebop idioms. Because of his dedication to the true art form of jazz, Barry received an Honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Northwestern University in 1995.
Featured with Barry will be the eminent saxophonist, composer, educator Donald Walden along with James Wendell Robinson on drums. Barry's long time friend, award winning jazz radio personality, Ed Love, will be the Master of Ceremony at this Eighteenth Annual Kwanzaa Jazz Concert.
The concert is a fundraiser for the church, sponsored by the Black Concerns Working Group. Donation includes an afterglow. For more information please call the church office at 313-833-9107 Monday - Friday from 9:30 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. or 313-869-2508 from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M.
UU Youth and Young Adult
Anti-Racism Analysis
Development Conferences
There will be three regional ARADC’S held across the continent this winter for youth aged 14 – 20 and young adults aged 18-35. Individual AR (anti race) analyses will be developed while learning about cultural, institutional, and personal racism. In the process we will build a safe, fun and healthy community. Look for more information and registration forms in the church office.
A Drop in the Bucket---
Submitted by Cindy Hill
What it says about inadequacy, futility, insignificance. A drop in the bucket. What’s the sense? What’s the use?
We are no longer the center of things. Copernicus removed the earth from the center of the solar system. Darwin removed humans from the center of the earth. Astronomy has removed the solar system from the center of the universe.
Well, who are we then and where are we? Physiologists call us "weak, watery solutions."
Mark Twain said "Man is the only animal that blushes - or needs to."
Just suppose we are the merest drops in the bucket. There are unspoken assumptions here. We assume that a full bucket is what we're aiming at, and that until the bucket is full, nothing is accomplished.
There is never a shortage of buckets. The empty-bucket litany is long and tedious: racism, sexism, ableism, authoritarianism, oppression, injustice, violence, environmental degradation...
You feel like a drop in the bucket? Who asked you to fill the bucket - especially all alone?
Remember how many there are who share your concerns. We may feel daunted but we are not one drop. A sense of isolation is the parent of the drop-in-the-bucket feeling. The UUSC, the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, is made up of UU folks sharing these concerns, partnering with other organizations, and working to fill empty buckets collectively. From Guatemala, where survivors of massacres are seeking justice, reconciliation and peace, to Burma, where refugees from a murderous military junta are struggling to keep themselves and the dream of democracy alive, to the United States, where the UUSC is engaging people of all ages to pursue electoral activism, defend civil liberties and speak out against injustice.
Take one of the little boxes from the radiator as you go out of the sanctuary. Put it on your table through the holiday season and invite unseen guests from far or near to be with you. Put an offering in it each day, your drops in the bucket. Make up a ritual if you’d like. Tell your children what it means.
Turn in your contribution to me on Jan. 2 or Jan. 9. A $25 contribution gives you an adult membership, $50 for dual. A contribution of $60 or more is matched by the UU Congregation at Shelter Rock in N.Y. If you prefer to skip the box, envelopes are available for you to write a check and turn that in to me as well.
Remember, the Grand Canyon was fashioned by drops of water.

Alive
Written by Alexandria Stevenson
Alive I strive to be the best - put my mind body and soul at rest. Whatever I know, I can pass the test – all day long I got it going on from sundown to early dawn. I pray that you heard what I say. I try to stay alive - a well determined pride that I can’t hide. I walk with stride positive not negative is how I live. See, ya got to live to give. I save the last for in Jesus name I wanna say peace.
